Johns Hopkins University provides the first public confirmation it’s possible to do just that, & demonstrates. Research focused on MacBook & iMac models, but researchers say similar techniques work on other computers from a wide variety of vendors. In other words, if a laptop has a built-in camera, it’s possible someone — whether the federal government or a malicious 19 year old — could access it to spy on the user at any time.
Apple went to some length & effort to make sure the LED would turn on whenever the built iSight camera starts taking images. Stephen Checkoway, computer science professor at Johns Hopkins proves circumventing this security feature is quite possible.
